About
UPS $170,000 Driver Salary refers to the news that full-time drivers working for the delivery company United Parcel Service are expected to earn a salary of up to $170,000 USD following a deal between UPS and the Teamsters Union. In early August 2023, the news became a subject of viral discussions and memes on social media, with the memes presenting UPS drivers as obscenely rich and IT and banking professionals being envious of them.
Origin
On July 25th, 2023, the American delivery company UPS and labor union Teamsters reached a tentative deal on a new five-year labor contract, in part to avert a worker strike.[1] According to the contract, full- and part-time UPS drivers will receive $2.75 more per hour in 2023, and $7.50 more over the length of the contract. The change raised wages for full-time UPS drivers to an average top rate of $49 per hour, with the full-time salary (not including benefits) being over $100,000.
On August 8th, 2023, Bloomberg columnist Conor Sen (@conorsen) tweeted[2] that UPS drivers were bound to make $170,000 per year (benefits included) by the end of their contract, attaching[3] an extract from a conference call (shown below, right). The tweet (shown below, left) received over 810 retweets and 11,600 likes in one day.
Later on August 8th, entrepreneur Anthony Pompliano (@APompliano) tweeted[4] about the $170,000 salary, commenting, "Truck drivers will be out here making more than some software engineers." The post (shown below) gained over 8,600 reposts and 110,600 likes in one day.
Spread
Following the viral spread of @conorsen and @APomliano's tweets, the news became a subject of viral discussions and memes on social media, primarily on Twitter. For example, on August 8th, 2023, Twitter[5] user @HighyieldHarry joked that investment banking analysts were switching professions to become UPS drivers, with the tweet gaining over 440 retweets and 7,300 likes in one day (shown below, left).
Also on August 8th, Twitter[6] account @StockMarketDrip shared a Steal His Look meme about UPS drivers that received over 180 retweets and 2,400 likes in one day (shown below, right).
Later that day, Twitter[7] user @jason made a tweet in which they incorrectly estimated the number of deliveries UPS drivers make and theorized that UPS was planning to introduce robotic delivery until the year 2030. Later that day, user @ninthhostage made a tweet[8] ridiculing the post that received over 2,500 retweets and 55,200 likes in one day (shown below).
More memes presenting imaginings of UPS drivers being obscenely rich went viral on Twitter over the following days.
