About
Vydamo's Goodbye To His Ape, Salazar refers to a dramatic post by Twitter / X user @vydamo_ in which he announced that he had to sell his Bored Ape NFT, which he had named Salazar, due to the creation of the Blur NFT marketplace contributing to the deflation of Salazar's price. The post, which included lines like "My kids know me as this ape. I met my wife when I WAS this ape and had my first kid when I still proudly wore this ape," was widely ridiculed on Twitter. It was later confirmed the post was made to parody Bored Ape holders expressing frustration at the plummeting value of their NFTs.
Origin
On March 28th, 2024, Twitter user @vydamo_[1] posted an announcement that he had to sell his ape Salazar, a white ape with a motorcycle helmet on, which he claims was an integral part of his identity. The tweet gained over 1,100 retweets and 1,300 likes in one day. The post (shown below) included a pair of very dramatic opening paragraphs that read:
It is with a heavy heart I announce the sale of my long term ape, Salazar. Most of my early followers know me as this ape. My kids know me as this ape. I met my wife when I WAS this ape and had my first kid when I was still proudly wore this ape. By extension, it is part of me.
I travelled around the world with this ape in my pocket. We went to the most luxurious hotels, the craziest night clubs and the most serene beaches. We had it all. Unfortunately, what blur is doing to apes is frankly unacceptable. Since the creation of Blur, the ape floor price has tumbled from 85e down to 12e.
Spread
The post quickly spread on Twitter as users joked about Vydamo claiming things like his "kids" know him as the ape. For example, on March 29th, 2024, Twitter user @srirachachau[2] quote-tweeted it with an image of Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview crying "I've abandoned my child!" in There Will Be Blood, gaining over 200 retweets and 1,000 likes in a matter of hours (shown below, left).
The same day, Twitter user @tomgara[3] commented that the tweet had several iconic lines, gaining over 90 retweets and 500 likes in hours (shown below, right).
Also on March 29th, Twitter user @CantEverDie[4] tweeted lines from the tweet, gaining over 1,000 retweets and 19,000 likes (shown below, left). User @coopercooperco[5] also mentioned that the tweet had several iconic lines that day, gaining over 25 retweets and 370 likes in one hours (shown below, right).
On March 29th, 2024, following the post's virality, Twitter user @AdamBumas[6] was among many who reported that @vydamos' post was not sincere and that he was poking fun at other NFT holders who were expressing anger at the plummeting value of their apes at the time (shown below).
