Watermelon Dress (hashtag: #watermelondress) is a photo fad in which people take pictures with strategically placed watermelon slices in the foreground to make it seem as if they are wearing a dress made out of watermelon. Since taking off the trend has become popular on twitter and Instagram with users sharing photos wearing their own “watermelon dress.”

Origin

The earliest known instance of the #watermelondress meme can be traced back to August 13th, 2016, when Instagram user @widyawince shared photographs of a little girl wearing the watermelon dress in forced perspective; however, the trend didn’t actually take off until May 2017. On May 8th, 2017, Instagram user @firuzetan shared a photograph of a baby wearing the watermelon, gaining over 300 likes.

Spread

Throughout May 2017, the trend continued gain traction as many other Instagram users began taking similar pictures with babies wearing the watermelon dress. On June 20th, 2017, Ellen Degeneres shared a photograph of a baby wearing the watermelon dress along with the hashtag #SummerFashion on her Instagram and Twitter accounts. The photo has gained over 1 million likes and has been favorited 20,000 times as of July 2017. Ellen's photo has inspired countless other users and celebrities to try the trend, including Melissa Joan Hart, Hoda Kotb, and Ryan Seacrest, among others.
