WebM is a video format created by Google. It is a royalty free alternative to HTML video and is a format made for publishing videos to the web (hence the name "WebM"). WebM uses Google's video codecs (VP8, VP9, AV1).

Origin

WebM is used on the website "4chan" as the format that is downloaded when you download a video from there. 4chan is a website where you can post images and videos anonymously in different boards (categories). This has caused people to download random or funny videos from "4chan" and combine them into one video and upload them to "YouTube," a very popular video sharing site, under the name of "WebM Compilation X" (X = number of other WebM compilations + 1)

WebM is media for the web. Hence its name "WebM" which means "Web Media"

Spread

On January 14, 2015, YouTube user "Acorn Scorn" uploaded the video "Dank Webm YouTube Comp." This is the first WebM compilation on YouTube. WebM compilations spread quickly as they are very easy to make (just use a software like MKVToolNix) but can easily get views and subscribers.
