What Could be Worse Than a Giant Paint Bubble refers to scene from SpongeBob SquarePants where SpongeBob gets panicked after he accidentally blow a paint bubble and then Patrick adding it into two bubbles. The scene gained popular as object labeling to depicting things that gets worse.
Origin
On May 10th, 2002, the season 3, episode 50a of SpongeBob SquarePants titled "Wet Painters" has been premiered in the US[1]. In the episode, SpongeBob accidentally blows a paint bubble by using hand dryer, then Patrick adding it and now they have two paint bubbles (scene shown below).
Spread
The scene gained popular in late 2010s and early 2020s when it was used as object labeling to depicting things that got worse. For example on January 31st, 2023, Reddit[2] user Graphenegem uploaded an edit that related to Fortnite to the /r/FortniteMemes subreddit. The post received 657 upvotes in two years (shown below).
On March 13th, 2023, Reddit[3] user darthjoey91 uploaded an edit about Silicon Valley Bank Collapse to the /r/BikiniBottomTwitter subreddit. The post received more than 5,200 upvotes in two years (shown below).
