About

"What The Fuck Is Up, Denny's?" is a memorable quote uttered by the singer of the hardcore-punk band Live Without in viral video of the band performing at a Denny's restaurant. The video features the band performing as the audience aggressively and violently dances in a mosh pit in the restaurant.

Origin

On May 19th, 2013, the YouTube account Live Without published the video "The Dennys Grand Slam," featuring the band performing at a Denny's on May 18th, 2013. Within six years, the post received more than 1.1 million views (shown below).

Spread

On July 24th, 2018, Twitter @blackwidowtx tweeted an isolated version of the video. The tweet received more than 2.6 million views, 100,000 likes and 37,000 retweets in less than two years (shown below).

Following the tweet, the website MetalSucks.net[1] wrote that the concert took place in an abandoned Denny's.

Additionally, that day, YouTuber Josh Bird published an isolated clip of the "What the fuck is up, Denny's?" line on YouTube. The post received more than 2 million views in less than two years (shown below).

2019 Revival

On December 14th, 2019, the band Wacko played at a seemingly functioning Denny's.[2] The concert was held as a reference to the Live Without performance, leading some to reference the meme in posts about the show. Twitter user @urfavhotgirl tweeted footage from the series and wrote, "WHAT THE FUCK IS UP DENNYS." The post received more than 1.3 million views, 89,000 likes and 20,000 retweets in less than two days (shown below).

Several media outlets covered the performance, including TIME,[3] Alternative Press[4] and more.

On October 27th, 2023, punk band Blink-182 posted a video promoting their 2024 tour to X[5] and YouTube[6] where they perform a song from their latest album "One More Time" in a Denny's, directly referencing the viral video, garnering over 9,200 likes on the former and 141,000 views on the latter in five days (shown below). At the start of the video, the lead singer yells to the crowd, "What the fuck is up, Denny's?"

That day, u/mattfuckyou, a member of the band Live Without, made a post to the /r/h3h3productions[7] subreddit expressing his disappointment that Blink-182 quote "ripped off" his band's video, writing:

Hey Family, Im in the band Live Without- (The Dennys band lol) as some people may have seen, Blink 182 just ripped off my bands video.

while I DO NOT CARE that other small bands or people do it at shows or whatever, Blink doing it and making merch off of it and not tagging us, reaching out, shouting us out at all is fucking lame AF. They are millionaires and trying to ripoff diy band stuff.

Dennys has made a point in ignoring us and trying to not associate themselves with us while also profiting off of our notoriety for years and now they are doing a tour with Blink around America.

Figured the fam would care with the ripping off small creators vibe etc. Any help, tagging or just reposting to try and make it loud enough for them to credit us AT LEAST would be MUCH APPRECIATED.

Later, he posted an edit to the post, adding, "EDIT: i guess the internet bullied them into reaching out lol," suggesting Blink-182 reached out to him.
