About
Yeah We Fancy Like Denny's is a viral video of a little girl singing at a Denny's restaurant in preparation for her dessert "on a date night." The song sung is a variation on Walker Hayes' "Fancy Like," also known as Yeah We Fancy Like Applebee's, that trended in mid-2021. After the original video was uploaded to TikTok in mid-2022, many users found the video cringe and Dueted it or inserted it into exploitable templates such as Does Yeat Finally Have Competition?, among others.
Precursor
On June 4th, 2021, American country singer Walker Hayes uploaded the music video for his song "Fancy Like" to YouTube, earning roughly 98.4 million views over the course of 14 months (shown below, left). On October 7th, 2021, Walker Hayes uploaded a new music video for the song to YouTube featuring Ke$ha, earning roughly 8.2 million views in 10 months (shown below, right). On January 21st, 2022, the song was released as a part of Hayes' album Country Stuff The Album.[1]
In June 2021, Hayes promoted the song on his TikTok, starting a dance trend on the platform. This predominantly started on June 13th, 2021, with a TikTok[2] posted by him that earned roughly 36.2 million plays and 2.5 million likes in 14 months. The song continued to trend on TikTok going into 2021. For instance, on July 10th, 2021, TikToker[3] dianalubov posted a video of actual Applebee's workers performing the dance, earning roughly 4.2 million plays and 383,900 likes in 13 months.
Origin
On August 20th, 2022, TikToker[4] user32278998 (Kelly Walker-Dingman) posted a video that showed presumably her daughter and her daughter's friend singing a variation of Hayes' "Fancy Like" that instead referenced Denny's because they were at a Denny's and their waiter had asked them what they wanted for dessert. The video earned an unknown amount of plays and likes because it was deleted soon after its upload.
Regardless, on August 20th, many TikTokers posted Duets and Stitches with the video that ultimately labeled it as funny due to the perceived cringeworthiness. For instance, on August 20th, 2022, TikToker[5] matthew_carey25 posted a Duet with the video writing "Why" in text overlay and earned roughly 61,300 plays and 5,700 likes in 10 days (shown below).
