Whatever. Overrated as Hell is an exploitable template showing two user reviews on Letterboxd. The first will call a widely-respected cinematic classic "Overrated as hell" while, a second, less-beloved film gets 5 stars from the same user, who writes "HOOOLY SHIT."

Origin

The origin of the meme is unclear. At some point before March 12th, 2022, an unknown user uploaded a screenshot of film reviews from a Letterboxxd user of the 1972 film The Godfather and the 2015 film Pixels. The user gave a half-star rating for The Godfather, calling it "overrated as hell," and a five-star rating for Pixels. On March 12th, 2022, iFunny^[1] user TheDarkKnightTriumphant uploaded the earliest known repost of the screenshot and received 173 smiles in two years (shown below).

The image was later reposted to other social media such as Facebook^[2], Reddit^[3], and Twitter / X.^[4] These posts received more than 12,000 reactions and 3,200 shares, 2,000 points, and 9,000 reposts and 128,000 likes, respectively.

In 2022, the image became a popular template, as users substituted the originals for other films. For example, on July 10th, 2022, Reddit^[5] user Swanlake24 uploaded an edit about Neon Genesis Evangelion and Azumanga Daioh to the /r/evangelionmemes subreddit. The post received more than 2,300 upvotes in two years (shown below, left). On October 28th, 2022, Reddit^[6] user M1das_OW2 uploaded a meme about The Owl House to the /r/TheOwlHouse subreddit. The post received more than 1,200 upvotes in two years (shown below, right).

On May 5th, 2023, Reddit^[7] user RizznerBraun uploaded a meme about the Attack on Titan series to the /r/okbuddyreiner subreddit. The post received more than 2,200 upvotes in one year (shown below, left). On May 9th, 2023, Twitter / X^[8] user @SkyaMalone uploaded an edit of the Paw Patrol movie and received 466 reposts and more than 8,200 likes in one year (shown below, right).
