About
When You Lie On Your Resume But Still Get The Job is a phrase used in image macros and on videos to describe content showing someone or something, often an animal, comically out of place in a given setting, as if they lied on their work resume to get there and it's obvious. The first viral meme to use the phrase was uploaded to Reddit in 2016 and became increasingly popular over the following years.
Origin
On August 23rd, 2016, Redditor u/breakno posted an image to /r/pics[1] of an orange cat sitting on an empty statue pedestal next to a golden lion, as if the cat is trying to imitate the lion (shown below). The post is captioned, "When you lie on your resume but still get the job," and gained over 62,800 upvotes in five years.
Spread
The image of the cat on the pedestal was shared numerous times across social media platforms that year and recreated as an image macro. This inspired more memes using the phrase. On August 7th, 2017, iFunny[8] user @Utopia posted a version of the meme referencing Sonic the Hedgehog, gaining over 54,000 smiles in four years (shown below).
Versions of the caption are also popular on videos of people failing or doing something out-of-place. For example, on September 8th, YouTuber[7] Eric Tennyson uploaded a video titled "When you get a new job and mark experienced on the resume" showing a person on an out-of-control mower, gaining over 5.3 million views in four years (shown below).
On July 9th, 2019, Redditor u/JadeNrdn posted an image to /r/pics[4] of a cat wearing a police dog harness along with the caption, gaining over 16,900 upvotes in two years (shown below, left). On October 7th, Cheezburger[5] posted a collection of memes using the caption (example shown below, right).
On October 1st, 2020, Instagram[6] page @onlyindade posted a video using the phrase as top text over a video of a truck driver destroying their truck, gaining over 230,000 views and 20,000 likes in 11 months (shown below).
On January 14th, 2021 Instagram[3] page @memes posted an image macro using the phrase over an image of a bicycle-scooter hybrid, gaining over 70,000 likes in eight months (shown below). On June 4th, Instagram[2] page @meowingtonsco posted an image macro of the original Reddit meme, gaining over 70,000 likes in three months.
