White Guys Selfie refers to an image of eight men, mostly white, who took a selfie at a tennis match in which their faces appear to cascade out from right to left. The picture, initially used in a photoshop battle, became used as a reaction image to captions describing scenarios in which one might expect to see a plethora of white men.

Origin

On July 3rd, 2016, Redditor Top_Cat17 posted a picture of the eight men to /r/OddlySatisfying,^[1] gaining over 16,000 points (shown below).

Spread

The following day, the picture was posted to /r/PhotoshopBattles, where it gained over 22,000 points.^[2] In the following days, it spread across social media as people began adding humorous captions to the picture commenting on how the group appeared to be all upper-middle class and white. For example, Fuck Jerry posted a meme with the picture on July 7th, gaining over 305,000 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @GabrielEnguard^[3] posted a joke calling them the "Large White Guy Collider," gaining over 8,500 retweets and 17,000 likes (shown below, right).

On September 30th, 2016, Buzzfeed^[4] published an article about the photo, finding out the identities of the men in the photo. They spoke to Joseph Ghaemi, the man at the back of the photo, who clarified he was actually half-Iranian and tan and said they were not as rich as the jokes made them out to be. Nevertheless, jokes about the photo continued in a similar vein over the following years. On November 18th, 2017, Twitter user @BigBabyJRAM^[5] posted the photo with the caption "when you win at solitaire on the computer," gaining over 27,000 retweets and 74,000 likes (shown below, left). A picture comparing the group to saltine crackers gained over 12,000 points on /r/blackpeopletwitter^[6] (shown below, right).
