Why Don't You Have a Piece of Bread and Maybe You'll Calm Down is a line spoken by Kim Richards in Real Housewives of Beverly Hills to Lisa Rinna during an argument. The line itself became used in reaction images primarily on Tumblr before users edited the line to read other texts.
Origin
The line comes from the March 3rd, 2015 episode of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.[1] In the scene, Kim Richards gets in an argument with Lisa Rinna which escalates to the point of Richards saying "Why don't you have a piece of bread and maybe you'll calm down!" (shown below).
Spread
The line became a quick favorite among Real Housewives fans. It was included in a list of quotes from the show in a September 18th, 2015 listicle from Thought Catalog.[2] On June 10th, 2015, a GIF of the scene was uploaded to Tenor with the caption "My Friends When I'm Hangry" (shown below, left). On June 4th, 2016, the GIF was uploaded to Tumblr by user sridevi[3] with the caption "my laptop: (starts hissing and wheezing and got her fans whirring on high speed) me:", gaining over 384,000 notes (shown below, right)
The GIF saw some use in posts as a reaction image over the following years before users began editing the text. On June 5th, 2019, Tumblr user smugsbunny[4] edited the GIF to reflect a text from a mother saying "Maybe you should eat a banana and sit outside for a while," gaining over 46,000 notes (shown below, left). On June 2nd, user megantheeuchiha[5] posted an existential edit which gained over 8,700 notes (shown below, right).
