About

Wine Mom is a slang term given to the series of memes and jokes that revolve around mothers who post online about needing their wine and being alcoholic. The memes, generally an example of Boomer Humor from a female perspective, has been around for decades with other online terminology such as Mommy Juice being used to glamorize the lifestyle. Over the years, it has grown in popularity and is often seen as similar to Weed culture for the way it's depicted online, replacing phrases like Dude Weed Lmao with Wine.

Origin

Early memes about wine moms were primarily created and shared in mommy blogs and facebook pages in the earlier 2010s era of online humor. Websites like Pinterest, or local gossip pages, would often feature memes about motherhood and drinking, with prominent examples being considered Normie at the time, similarly to Minions Memes. One of the first widespread prominent examples comes from the website someecards.com, which would create electronic cards meant as little zingers to share with others. On January 28th, 2014, the oldest still existing example[1] was uploaded to the site (shown below).

I can't wait for the day when I can drink with my kids instead of because of them. someecards

As memes about motherhood and drinking began to spread, the term Wine Mom was officially created on Urban Dictionary shortly after. On March 6th, 2015, the term was defined by Urban Dictionary user TheQuestionIs WhoAre You[2] in which they describe a Wine Mom as a former party girl who acts too extra and doesn't let her age stop her from overdrinking (shown below).

Wine mom βœ” f Wine moms are like those fun drunk girls you always meet at parties, except now they're all grown up! They know how to have fun and won't let age get in their way of some drunken moments. They are the definition of extra and they're definitely those ladies at the block party getting drunk off of too much pink wine "hey ladies, I brought the white Zinfandel to the play date!" "Tina it's only 11 o'clock! This is too funny, we are so bad. Go wine moms amirite" by Thequestionis Whoare You March 6, 2015

Spread

Later that year, talk about wine moms began to increase through Quirky advertising and merchandise. Products that were created solely for the purpose of appealing to Wine Moms began to be posted online as they were found in stores, such as Bed Bath & Beyond, and Tuesday Morning with a prominent example being posted to Tumblr by the user warlockhedgehog[3] on May 22nd, 2015, showing a wood block kitchen decor item expressing the need for more wine (shown below).
