World Cup Couch, also known as Mexico-chan because of the original version, refers to a series of exploitable images featuring a girl in football gear sitting on a couch surrounded by men in football gear, creating an image similar to the Piper Perri Surrounded meme. The edits rose in prominence during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where 4chan users from the sports board /sp/ would insert the losing team from a match as the girl and the winning team as the men.

Origin

The original art was drawn by Mexican artist Accel Art and uploaded to his personal Twitter account on June 17th, 2018.^[1] The picture features a Mexican girl wearing the gear of Mexico's national football team, while sitting on a couch surrounded by men wearing the kit of Germany's national football team, in reference to the FIFA World Cup match featuring both countries that played that same day.

Spread

The same day, the art was posted on 4chan's sports board /sp/.^[2] During the prematch, a thread with the art was created on /sp/,^[3] and on the match Mexico defeated Germany 1-0. In response to the win, an anonymous user submitted an edit reverting the gears on the same thread (shown below, left).^[4] Another thread was created with another edit, reverting the gears and adding some changes to the girl (shown below, right).^[5]

Throughout the World Cup, edits changing the jerseys to relate to the day's games continued to appear on /sp/. The majority of the edits were relatively straightforward, only changing the jerseys of the characters in the original illustration (examples shown below).

Users on the board began using more in-depth exploitables after roughly a week and a half of the World Cup. For example, an anonymous user uploaded a variation with Australia on the couch surrounded by emus, representing Australia's infamous Emu War (shown below, left). Another variation showed Germany as a trap (shown below, right).
