About
Achilles the Psychic Cat is a cat who allegedly predicts the outcomes of matches at the 2018 World Cup, similar to animals like Paul the Octopus.
Origin
News about Achilles the Cat began spreading just after the opening match of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, as Achilles was praised for accurately predicting Russia's win over Saudi Arabia.[1] The cat works at Russia's Hermitage Museum catching mice, and is deaf.
Spread
Achilles correctly predicted Brazil would beat Costa Rica (shown below, left) and Russia would beat Egypt (shown below, right).
<center
Achilles generated much media attention when it predicted that Nigeria would defeat Argentina in a crucial game of the World Cup. Were Nigeria to win, Argentina, who surprisingly only gained one point in the first two games of the group stage of the World Cup, would be eliminated. This prediction was covered by Twitter Moments,[2] Reuters,[3] DNA India,[4] and more. The cat was proven wrong when Argentina defeated Nigeria and advanced to the knock-out round of the tournament.
