About

Xbox 720 refers to a rumored name for the 3rd generation of the Xbox Microsoft console, being an upgraded version of the "Xbox 360." In May 2013, the company revealed the official name of the console as "Xbox One," which inspired a series of ironic memes with the "Xbox 720" name.

Origin

The Xbox 360[1] console was released on November 22nd, 2005, in the United States and Canada. After its release, fans speculated the next generation console would be named "Xbox 720," as a Chinese blog post from October 23rd, 2006 explains that Microsoft's new product "may be named Xbox 3, Xbox 720 or NetXbox."[2]

One of the first images of the rumored "Xbox 720" was uploaded on March 15th, 2007 to the Trend Hunter[3] website. The image shows a round-shaped console with a disc being inserted in the front (seen below).
