About

Y La Queso, Y La Que Soporte or Y La 🧀❌🍵 refers to a slang phrase used by the Spanish-speaking LGBTQ+ community to express an opinion that may be considered controversial by many people, but the person does not care. The expression also appears as a combination of the cheese emoji, "X" emoji, and the green tea emoji, as "Y La 🧀(queso – cheese)❌🍵(té verde – green tea)." The slang became popularized around November 2020 on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Origin

The exact date of this expression's first use is unknown, but the earliest available usage of the similar phrase "Y la que soporte" (and the one who supports, in a literal translation to English) can be tracked to November 19th, 2020, when Twitter[1] user @tejuinop replied to a video of LGBTQ+ Mexican celebrity Daniel Urquiza, using the expression to indicate his support. The post (seen below) received 5 likes in three years.

According to the website Homosensual,[2] the slang's meaning can be translated into other expressions such as "And to whomever it pleases" and "whoever endures/approves of what I am saying." TikTok[3] user @plani.ca posted a video on April 15th, 2023, explaining how to translate "y la queso" to English. The video (seen below) garnered 7,000 plays and 711 likes in a week.

The music video (seen below) for "Y LA QUE SOPORTE" was posted on @HolyMilkMusic's YouTube[4] channel, garnering 110,000 views and 2,700 likes in two years.

On February 25th, 2023, the slang phrase was featured in a scene of the Mexican telenovela Amor Invencible.
