About
Yeet Cannon is a slang term often used by gun enthusiasts when referring to a firearm that typically used for recreational purposes with little utility for hunting or self-defense. In June 2019, "Yeet Cannon 9" won an online contest to name a 9mm handgun produced by the firearms manufactured Hi-Point.
Origin
The exact origin of the term "yeet cannon" is unclear, but appears to have been popularized in multiplayer shooter games. On March 22nd, 2018, Vimeo user Alex Reyes uploaded footage from the game PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds titled "Supressed Yeet Cannon" (shown below).
Spread
On December 13th, 2018, YouTuber Highlight it uploaded a video titled "200 IQ Pro League Maestro Spot | Yeet Cannon Before The Nerf," featuring footage of a Rainbow Six Siege match in which a gun nicknamed "yeet cannon" is used (shown below).
On June 20th, 2019, Urban Dictionary[1] user ZuluFoxtrotGulf submitted an entry for "Yett Cannon," describing it as "a large bore firearm with little in the way of a practical function or common use (I.E. concealed carry or hunting)" (shown below).
Hi-Point Firearms YC9
On January 22nd, 2019, the TFB TV YouTube channel uploaded an unboxing video titled "Hi-Point Reveals a NEW Tactical 9mm Pistol!", in which a spokesperson from the Hi-Point firearms manufacturer unveiled an unnamed pistol (shown below).
On June 5th, the Hi-Point Firearms Facebook[2] page announced a contest to name the gun titled "Name the Nine" (shown below).
During the final round of voting, the Yeet Cannon 9 (YC9) was voted the name of the pistol with 95.9% of the vote against CTAC9 (shown below). That day, Redditor jmbojenkins420 submitted a post celebrating the poll results to /r/Firearms,[3] where it gathered upwards of 2,500 points (99% upvoted) and 380 comments.
On July 4th, 2019, YouTuber Brandon Herrera uploaded a video titled "Yeet Cannon is CANCELLED," which discussed the memes about the Hi-Point YC9 (shown below).
