Part of a series on 2016 Hurricane Matthew. [View Related Entries]

About

You and Everyone You Know Are Dead, and Your Kids Die Too is a catchphrase said by Fox News anchor Shepard Smith amid coverage of Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Since its utterance by Smith, the viral video and phrase have been used in various memes, often in reference to deadly hurricanes, with the scene itself becoming an exploitable format in green-screen video edits in late 2022.

Origin

On October 6th, 2016, Shepard Smith was part of round-the-clock coverage for the category 5 storm that was inching closer to Florida and the East Coast as it was on its eventual way to South Carolina. During his reporting, he decided to attempt to explain how seriously the storm should be taken due to its proximity to the state by saying, "You and everyone you know are dead, and your kids die too." The segment was later uploaded to YouTube by the channel Carl Weathers[1] that same day, where it went on to get over 2.4 million views in six years (shown below).

On October 21st, 2022, Funnyjunk user Bugkiller[2] uploaded a green-screen version of the scene covering the original weather map of the hurricane's path and claimed it to be made at the behest of another user with his will to see more people use it to create additional memes. The exploitable video format gained over 600 upvotes in two days as other users began editing in humorous clips (shown below).

Spread

That same day the template was created on October 21st, 2022, Funnyjunk user fartsmcdougle[3] would prove to be the first to use the scene as a meme format, with footage of a man practicing kung-fu nunchaku on a deck and Shepard Smith claiming that such a thing is impossible to survive, earning over 339 upvotes in 24 hours (shown below).
