The meme format has been circulated since 2020 and has often been used to feature unusual and obscure music genres, typically recaptioning the genre in the image.

Origin

The You Said You Listened to All Genres format is based on the older Woman Admits to Cheating meme format, which uses an artwork posted by artist Reese Royce (ReeseRoyce215) prior to May 11th, 2015 (shown below).^[1][2]

Prior to January 8th, 2020, an unknown user captioned the template with a dialogue between the man and the woman, with the man saying, "You said you listened to all genres," and the woman responding, "Yeah but not whatever the fuck this screaming shit is" (shown below). On January 8th and February 4th, Instagram^[3] user piquenyc X^[4] user @benthefisherman made the earliest found reposts of the image, with their posts gaining over 130 likes and 330 reposts and 1,500 likes, respectively, in five years.

Spread

On January 8th, 2020, X^[5] user @senza_band posted the earliest found edit of the image, altering the dialogue to reference the screamo genre (shown below). The post garnered over 30 reposts and 100 likes on X in five years.

Also on January 8th, Instagram^[6] user megamitenseifan53 posted the earliest video meme based on the format, a Shin Megami Tensei meme that garnered over 90 likes on Instagram in five years (shown below).

Through the 2020s, multiple image and video versions of the meme were shared on Reddit, Instagram, iFunny and X. Notably, in 2021, a Cruelty Squad version of the meme made by an unknown user saw viral spread online. An October 21st, 2021, repost by iFunny^[7] user pf50k11j2g4895 received over 1,100 smiles in four years (shown below).
