While much of the gaming world has been excited about the imminent release of what promise to be some very good games, a bizarre and now short-lived controversy has been brewing over a small Nintendo Switch game called The Last Hope: Dead Zone Survival.

The game concerns a man with a gun defending a teen girl in a maroon T-shirt from a horde of zombies in a post-apocalyptic future. It looks like this:

As was obvious to pretty much all who encountered the game's trailer, developers V.G. Games were essentially making a ripoff of The Last of Us.

Here's to hoping a reupload to the trailer below is still active by the time you read this, because someone seems dead set on erasing this game from history.

After just three weeks in existence on the Switch store, during which time media outlets called it the worst game of 2023 or ever, the game was removed from the Switch's eShop and its trailer was removed from YouTube.

At the time of writing, it's unclear why the game has been removed, but some have speculated that Sony killed it for IP infringement.

Eurogamer suggested it was a scam cooked up to trick confused gamers looking to purchase The Last of Us. According to reports from its brief time on this earth, The Last Hope took place in one level and took 13 minutes to complete. It retailed at 9 pounds.

The controversy made its way through gaming subcultures online, and news of The Last Hope's death was met with some ironic mourning on social media.

While the saga was brief and confusing, it seems safe to assume The Last Hope: Dead Zone Survival will not be missed.
