George Santos Lives Another Day In Congress, Escaping Expulsion As The Internet Reacts To The Political Drama
George Santos survived an expulsion vote from the House of Representatives last night, with 213 members voting for him to stay and 179 voting for him to leave.
The vote was spearheaded by his fellow New York Republicans, who were fed up with the Congressman's numerous documented lies and 23 criminal charges.
Some of his opponents appeared to be very excited, such as Congressman Robert Garcia whose post about it on Twitter / X yesterday garnered thousands of likes. Santos himself swore to fight the charges.
George Santos has brought an unprecedented number of memeable moments to the House. He was spotted last week by journalists holding a baby in his arms and when asked if it was his, he replied, "Not yet."
Santos has also been accused of fraud and multiple campaign finance violations. Prior to serving in Congress, he was purported to have been a scam artist, with a houseless veteran saying Santos allegedly stole money from a GoFundMe for his sick pet and former associates saying he lied about where he went to college and where he worked.
Famously, Santos also lied about his ancestry, claiming to be descended from Holocaust survivors (he is not). When asked about this claim, he replied, "I never claimed to be Jewish, I said I was Jew-ish."
The Congressman's bacon was ultimately saved by the majority of the Republican caucus, as well as 32 Democrats. The Democrats, including Congressman Jamie Raskin, said they voted to keep Santos in the house because while he was accused of many crimes, he had yet to be convicted.
Raskin called himself a "Constitution guy," saying that it would set a disturbing precedent to remove Santos without a conviction.
Santos himself called it a victory for due process. Others were surprised that the Congressman was still hanging on, proving to many online that we live in what may be the weirdest possible United States political timeline.
