Gina Carano's Disney Lawsuit Opens With 'Star Wars'-esque Text Crawl, Giving Much Of Social Media Secondhand Embarrassment
Gina Carano, the actress perhaps best known for being contentiously fired from The Mandalorian in early 2021 for a series of inflammatory social media posts that included comparing being an American conservative to being a Jew in the Holocaust, mocking masking during the COVID pandemic, criticizing pronoun usage and spreading 2020 Election conspiracies, is suing Disney for her role back, as well as monetary damages.
To many, the introductory paragraph of her case did not inspire confidence that the lawsuit was being filed in good faith as the news emerged online this week and quickly garnered attention.
In a move that struck numerous social media users as bizarre, Carano and her legal team introduced her lawsuit with a Star Wars introductory text crawl parody.
Complete with a play on the classic Star Wars line, "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away," Carano appears to cast her critics as the evil Empire stifling her free speech rights. She compares her firing to the destruction of the planet Alderaan while she fought against an "online bully mob who demanded her compliance with extreme progressive ideology."
The suit also alleges, in Star Wars-esque text, that Disney took no action against male stars who voiced similar opinions as Carano's online.
The colorful introduction stunned many on social media, as multiple users felt it made the lawsuit seem unserious and would likely fail in court.
Adding to the perception that Carano's lawsuit is a bit of a circus is the fact that Twitter and X Corp are voicing that the company will help fund her case. Elon Musk is a self-proclaimed champion of free speech and also has a well-publicized beef with Disney, which pulled its advertising from his platform after he pushed an anti-semitic Great Replacement conspiracy on the app.
Yesterday, both the official X account and Musk chimed in voicing their financial support to Carano in the case.
History suggests that Elon Musk's support could bode ill for Carano, as the billionaire does not have a great track record in a court of law. He notably failed to back out of buying Twitter, the platform where Carano made her inflammatory posts, in court.
