Henry Kissinger, the former U.S. Secretary of State and one of the most influential and controversial diplomats of the 20th century, died Wednesday at his Connecticut home at the age of 100, his consulting firm announced yesterday.

Kissinger, who came to power during the 1970s and served under Nixon and Ford, was best known for helping thaw relationships between the U.S. and China as much as for his foreign policy decisions that contributed to deaths of millions across Cambodia, Bangladesh, Argentina, Chile and other countries.

Many online have been directly accusing the late diplomat of war crimes, his worst deed being a secret carpet-bombing campaign in Cambodia during the Vietnam War that killed thousands and led to rise of the rise of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot, whose reign killed nearly two million Cambodians.

These reasons, among others, are exactly why Kissinger has long been put near the very top of the list of people many on the internet wanted to see dead. Ironically, death was something that Kissinger masterfully managed to avoid for a very long time, as the controversial diplomat celebrated his 100th birthday in May this year, leading to memes of frustration like the one below.
