The rapper formerly known as Kanye West is now "Ye."

Yesterday, a judge granted the rapper's request to have his name legally changed from Kanye Omari West to just "Ye." The rapper tweeted a statement to this effect in 2018, but didn't file an actual request until August of 2021.

The name change caps off a tumultuous year for the rapper, whose 2021 has seen him getting divorced from Kim Kardashian, releasing the massive Donda after haunting Mercedes-Benz Stadium like the Phantom of the Opera, and continuing his successful career in fashion.

While the name change may signify a new era for the rapper (whose Twitter handle is still @KanyeWest), it seems much of social media was nonplussed, with many recalling a certain viral video.

Ye is hardly the first pop star to undergo a quixotic name change. Prince famously changed his name to a symbol, and Grimes toyed with changing her name to "C" during her relationship with Elon Musk. In both cases, people continued to refer to the pop stars by their more previous names.
