Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene claimed on Twitter that she had been “swatted” in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

While her announcement was short on details, swatting generally refers to somebody placing a false call to the cops and telling them to go to the home of a target of online harassment, usually by fabricating serious claims that warrant a SWAT team raid.

The conspiracy-minded member of Congress associated with the Republican party’s most extreme side thanked police officers and promised more details to come. Right-wing, controversial influencer Jack Posobiec promised to host her on his show to talk about the incident.

Some opposed to Greene and her brand of politics made fun of the incident online following the news, speculating that she "deserved it" or that her thanking the police was a little ridiculous.

Some just posted jokes, wondering whether the fly that famously landed on Mike Pence’s head in 2020 was involved.

Several posters tried to guess who had done the swatting, because Greene did not specify a culprit. Many on the right also assumed it had been the left in some form or another, but others named possible culprits from within Greene’s own party.

The alleged swatting comes amid increased attention to the practice after YouTuber Keffals successfully organized a campaign to take down the controversial forum Kiwi Farms, which allegedly posted information leading to the swatting of her and others in the past.

Police SWAT teams are typically heavily armed and trained to use aggressive tactics, believing they are confronting violent criminals, so swatting can lead to death for its targets and has in past incidents.

Greene’s claims, if true, show a very-online practice of intimidation being used in the national political arena against sitting officeholders, and may open a new front of political violence in America.
