Last week, Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and her team sent emails to every registered Democrat asking for a $15 donation to combat the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Many didn't perceive the message as wholesome, however, and actually found it desperate, expressing this in memes and mockery across social media.

The email led with, "I don't know what to say," and went on to state, "I asked you Monday. I asked you Tuesday. I asked you Wednesday. I asked you Thursday. I'm truly sorry to ask you again today," ultimately asking for $15 donations because Pelosi and her team failed to meet the first "End of Quarter Deadline" since the Supreme Court's ruling.

When sent out to registered Democrats, instead of obliging with a gift, many found the email tone-deaf. This was because of their widely held belief that the liberal-minded officials they'd elected had neglected women's reproductive freedoms for too long by not codifying Roe into law much sooner.

The backlash was palpable on Twitter, where many users claimed it was "embarrassing" or had similar sentiments. Memes exploiting and recaptioning screenshots of the email appeared on Instagram and Facebook, humorously repurposing Pelosi's message to make it seem like she was asking for a vape, among other punchlines.

Ultimately, it seems that Pelosi's efforts are not landing with her supporters. For a party that wants to win big in the next election, emails like these don't appear to be helping the cause — as can be seen through these memes as a form of public expression that sways public opinion, perhaps more than even other mass media today.
