Redditor Nearly Breaks Up With Her Boyfriend Of Two Years Because Of Misogynistic TikTok Comments, Gets An Unexpected Surprise
An /r/TrueOffMyChest Redditor is going viral on the subreddit after sharing the story of how she nearly broke up with her boyfriend of two years for writing hateful TikTok comments.
The now-deleted user posted the story, titled "i’m breaking up with my bf of 2 years because of a tiktok comment," yesterday, where it's since gained over 10,300 upvotes and 1,800 comments so far.
In the post, she explains how a friend sent her a TikTok video where one man says he got revenge on his cheating girlfriend by cheating on her, saying, "a woman’s duty to be nurturing and forgiving in a relationship" and to understand that "certain men aren’t monogamous."
As if the contents of the video weren't troubling enough, the user found her boyfriend tagging two mutual friends at the top of the comments seemingly agreeing with the clip. In particular, he commented, "women ☕️," a copypasta typically used to share contempt for women when they do something perceived as "cringey."
The comment was apparently enough to convince the 18-year-old Redditor to consider breaking up with her boyfriend. She talked about how great of a guy she thought he was before the comments, how he looked up to his mother as a hero, but that she felt "sick" after seeing the way he talked about women on TikTok. To make matters worse, she then found comments from him on all the videos under the TikToker's posts.
i feel sick. i thought we had the same views on things like this? he was raised my a single teen mom who worked 3 jobs to keep a roof over his head, food in his mouth, and allow him to play soccer despite their tight budget and expensive little league fees.
when we first started dating i asked him who his role model was and he said his mom. he went on and on about how strong and brave she is and how much he appreciates her for all she does for him. his mom was single and living alone at 17 because my bfs father cheated on her after she gave birth and was recovering because he “can’t be expected to just NOT have sex for eight weeks.”
She updated the story later, writing how she was driving to his work to break up with him when his mother called her to ask about Thanksgiving dinner. She then told his mother what she saw on TikTok and she told her that he was not at work, rather, he was looking at an apartment for them that he'd gotten a good deal on, planning to surprise her for her graduation.
This unexpected development made her change her mind and reconsider things. In the final paragraph, she wrote:
his moms coming over to look at the screenshots i have then she’s taking me back to their house to confront him. she’s literally the sweetest you guys. she said she wanted to be in the house when i talk to him just in case. currently sitting right inside the front door of my house taking the 8 mins in between their house and mine to type this out. i am in SHOCK. i’m just waiting for her to pull up so i’ll update as soon as i can. i don’t think i’m that sad anymore? just pissed off and confused as hell.
The Redditor posted another update to the story shortly after, but it has since been deleted with seemingly no available archives. However, the top commenter under the first post shared what it was purportedly about.
According to the user, u/kelseekill, her boyfriend explained how the comments were a ruse to try and bait another friend with similar "toxic" viewpoints to the ones in the videos. They were trying to get proof of his misogyny and toxicity by writing the comments so they could show his girlfriend what he thought about women.
Supposedly, he had "lots of proof" to back this up, including DMs between the friends involved in the ruse. In their final paragraph, the commenter stated:
In the end, she still wanted to take a month or so break to heal from the whole incident with rules like no dating/intimacy with other people, no frequent texting, going to individual counseling and then maybe couples counseling.
The post has since inspired a lot of discussion in the comments. One Redditor wrote, "As someone in their late 20s, the saddest part of this for me is that they’re passing up the nice ass $1,000/month apartment. Teenage relationships are dumpster fires and almost never last but you will NEVER find a better deal on a place to live." Another said, "Seems like bit of an overreaction no? Like it was dumb what the boyfriend did but yeah."
It's unclear why the Redditor deleted her second update post, but some felt it was good to know things might still work out for them. Guess we'll have to wait and see if another update pops up in the near future to conclude the viral tale.
