Shortly After Getting Unbanned For Threats Against Twitch, Narcissa Wright Is Permabanned Again, Leading To Even More Confusion

A messy situation on Twitch seems to only be getting messier, as the streaming platform has reinstated its permanent ban of speedrunner Narcissa Wright, just one week after shortening her initial permaban to a suspension and before she was able to return to streaming.


Last month, Twitch permanently banned Wright for accidentally opening an NSFW image on stream, a violation of the site's policy on accidental nudity. This led to a public meltdown from Wright, who in a fit of despair tweeted that she wanted to "shoot people at Twitch HQ" and herself. She publicly clarified the threat wasn't serious, and remarkably, Twitch shortened the permanent ban to a three-week suspension. This sparked confusion from Twitch users who felt other streamers have suffered harsher consequences for less egregious offenses.

At the moment, it is unclear why Twitch reinstated Wright's permanent ban. Theorists on Reddit's /r/LivestreamFail have suggested it's possible that Twitch's initial decision to lessen the ban may not have taken her tweeted threat into account. Others suggested a higher-up may have overridden the decision of the initial team that unbanned her.

Regardless of the reason, Wright's reinstated permaban seemed to be well-received by much of the Twitch community, as Wright has grown notorious on the website for other prior transgressions, and many believed a permanent ban was the right call.


Wright has since moved to YouTube, where she is doing "book club"-style streams of the Harry Potter novels.
