Yeah…that statement disregards the basic process of how humans negotiate their behavoir with society.
Instead, I feel you need to take a note from Shakespeare's Prince Harry- assume the "character" of yourself you wish other people to see.
Carefully choose a character that is a version of yourself that you are both comfortable playing as (so you don't chaff under it and let it slip off like a cheap halloween mask) and fulfills your goals. Don't necessarily lie about who you are and your desires- just carefully choose what to highlight and as well as the time and place to highlight it. Never assume a truly false self- just make a caricature of yourself.
