Heartwarming, but Finn was "friends" with a different Stormtrooper,

Slip, the Stormtrooper that died and left a bloody hand print on Finn's helmet was training buddies with Finn. Slip was considered one of the weakest and Phasma (Chrome Trooper) chided Finn for helping him. Slip became one of the stronger Troopers and because Finn helped him out, Slip covered for him when Finn hesitates to attack civilians.
