Honestly…. This sounds just about as bad as the current reboot. But for a completely different reason…. Like, if this happened, it would be a try hard "dark and edgy" reboot. And we all know how those usually go….

Ah, the classic "Two extremes"-logic. In terms of colors:
If the people want light grey, they'll give white.
If the people complain about the white, they'll give black.
If the people complain about the black, they'll say "You don't know what you want". (Which to me almost always sounds like "you should want what I want you to want.")
