Well as an American I would say the EU is an undemocratic monolith that only cares about itself and was only hurting Britain. This is based on the knowledge Britain was only allowed to act as an advisory to the appointed (not elected) officials who run the EU. As such Britain had effectively no power in the EU as they could neither propose legislation nor any ability to actually oppose the decisions of the EU, thus Britain was effectively beholden to laws they had no say in. The EU need Britain far more than the British need the EU because Britian has one of the largest and healthiest economies in the EU right now which was working despite EU legislation and not because of it. To put this in a rather ironic historical perspective Britain has almost the exact same reasons for wanting to leave the EU as the American Colonies had for wanting to leave the British Empire
