Actually, it depends. If there's a gold bar in a trash bag, whoever threw it in there might have also thrown away other valuable things; it's probably worth taking the whole thing with you just so you can search through it more thoroughly in a less public environment.

Incidentally, what are you doing rooting through other people's trash in the first place? Are you a raccoon? Or the protagonist of an RPG? Or both?
