Chicago students trash Walmart during walkout over gun violence Chicago students trash Walmart during walkout over «, gun violence NEW NEWS ALERT NEWS ALERTNEWS ALERTNEWS ALERTNEWS ALERT FUX32 AMATEUR VIDEO SHOWS DOZENS OF 9:11 TEENS CAUSING CHAOS AT LOCAL WALMART By: Dane Placko POSTED: MAR 15 2018 09:04PM CDT VIDEO POSTED: MAR 15 2018 09:34PM CDT UPDATED: MAR 16 2018 05:48AM CDT Chicago police are trying to identify the dozens of students from Simeon Career Academy who they say took part in a vandalism spree while they were supposed to be protesting guns Shoppers and store employees were stunned by the destruction Wednesday morning at the Walmart in Chatham Market on the South Side Chicago police say it started when students at neighboring Simeon Career Academy were allowed to leave the school for 17 minutes to take part in the nationwide walkout to protest guns Police say between 40 and 60 of those students crossed the street and trashed parts of the store, knocking over product displays, yanking items off shelves, breaking packages and stealing small items like chips and candy. In a statement, a Chicago Public Schools spokesperson says: "We are very concerned by these allegations and we are reviewing the matter." Some of the students that FOX 32 talked to at Simeon say they're angry that a walkout intended to promote peace instead led to vandalism and violence 2 FOX 32 showed the video to 21st Ward Alderman Howard Brookins, who was instrumental in getting the big box retailers to move to the South Side We've worked too hard to try to get these national retailers here in our community. And this doesn't help us. It makes no sense to tear up the community which you call home," he said. A Chicago police spokesman says they're reviewing what he calls "high quality" video surveillance from Walmart to identify the students at fault, as well as videos posted to social media He says those students will likely be charged with misdemeanors and face discipline from the school.

Rachel Penn is thoughtful. 14 hrs feeling My son asked if he could walk out in protest today...here's how the conversation went... Son: is it ok if I protest on Wednesday? Me: protest what? Why would you do that? Son: protests initiate change; they bring awareness to the issue Me: yes, like what... Son: like civil rights; people had to protest for the right to vote, etc (he went on) Me: that's true! Protests can be a great catalyst. So what are you protesting? Son: gun laws Me: and what are the current gun laws? Son I don't know, but they need to change Me: how do you know that if you don't know what they are? Who makes the gun laws? Whose attention are you trying to get? State, federal, local..? Son: I don't know Me: then no, you may not protest in ignorance. You don't protest something just bc everyone else is doing it. What is happening in our schools is wrong, and scary, and sad, and yes, some things need to change But you must educate yourself before you can be an agent of change. ...I'm all about protesting for change, for justice, and being passionate about a cause; I'm not about blindly following the crowd in ignorance.
Joseph Dobrian D-WIR "This 'school walkout' thing is giving me serious 1984' vibes. Schools are sanctioning it, so it isn't actually a walkout. It's actually students conforming to the government authority by speaking a government-approved opinion in a government-approved venue. And that opinion is that they should have their own rights taken away by the government whose opinion they are expressing You have students marching with the sanction of the state to demand less freedom from the state... and everyone is pretending that their doing so is somehow brave and rebellious.
