Honestly, the writers did such a good job with Eclipsa. Everybody expected her to be a sadistic, manipulative evil witch, but not only did she turn out to be a misunderstood victim whose only true fault was to not overlook enough the consequences of her actions, she just did the ultimate hero move by saving the very kingdom that had betrayed her, from her own daughter, who was powerful enough to destroy literally anyone else, all the while using a spell that save everyone INCLUDING Meteora. And let's not forget her giving the wand back to Star in a moment when she could've decided to keep it for herself with no one in position to stop her.
I feel like anyone else in her situation would've just snapped and taken over the kingdom in a brutal vendetta. Which I assume is probably what's gonna happen with Glabgorg.
I get the impression that the spell really was supposed to outright kill Meteora, leading to some implications about Eclipsa's morality and where her loyalty/feelings lie especially regarding the adopted Butterfly line, but I guess we'll never know for a long while.
