Sakurai and Iwata worked together on quite a few projects like Kirby and the first two Smash games, I imagine Iwata's passing might have hit Sakurai hard (and wouldn't surprise me if he worked in a tribute to his late friend into Ultimate).

Sorry to break it to you, but Sakurai made Kirby, not Iwata.
