Defense spending largely benefits international corporations and its dubious that a significant amount of the benefit goes to the people who paid for it. Actually most of the money for defense spending comes from blue states and most of the factories for guns and tanks are in red states, so definitely the people who pay for it don't see the benefits.

Remember what ended the cold war? Russia over-spending on defense. Since then we've spent a lot more on defense, more than any country in the history of the planet. We could scale it back and still be outspending the top 10 other countries combined.
