Jim Mortensen, a current writer and storyboard artist for Nickelodeon, responded to the criticism by mocking and belittling Stephen Hillenburg's wishes. Mortensen said that if he was a show creator, he wouldn't care about making rules about his creation. He also said that he "wishes" something he made could get merch and spin-offs.

I could understand a Nickelodeon employee mocking the fans' outrage, but a Nick artist mocking the now-deceased creator for having rules and creative integrity? This is just rude. It also comes across as a bit jealous and spiteful of Hillenburg just because SpongeBob was so successful for Nickelodeon.
