Since many have misunderstood my point here, I can assure you that it doesn't have to do with the two statements being contradictory, as both statements were brought up in the same speech. Rather, it's how people choose to take the top quote and present it as a justification for riots, falsely painting MLK's opinion on the matter as positive rather than negative.

Yes, riots are a result of injustice, and steps should be taken to have said injustice be rid of, but attempting to do so through violent hysteria is not a method that MLK was ever in favor of.

But these are not contradictory statements, nor is the first one ever implied to be exclusively positive. He just said "well of course oppressed people will express themselves with riots, it's only natural". That is less a positive statement and more just a neutral one. That is likely why the rest of his quotes are all about peaceful problem resolution; it aligns better with his personal opinions like the second quote here does.

He can definitely ascertain that riots are the language of the unheard while recognizing that they are socially destructive and self-defeating and have both statements work well to describe that reality. I think any of us can, really.
