Becoming a US police officer does not take 8 weeks, that is just bullshit. It actually takes something like 4 years.

Depends on how you decide to calculate it. A quick Google search says both at least two years of post-secondary schooling before you can apply (although it doesn't seem to be a requirement that it pertain to police work). Other job description postings suggest only 60 hours of schooling before you can enter a 22 week training regimen: https://work.chron.com/long-train-cop-21366.html

After that they go onto probation and/or on-the-job training that can span a year or two. They aren't a full fledged officer, but chances are they're performing many of the duties of one by that point, including being out in the field.
