Fun fact, despite popular belief, the majority of African slaves were not captured and enslaved by European colonists, but by expanding pre-colonial African nations such as the Kingdom of Benin, Kingdom of Dahomey, the Oyo Empire, and the Ashanti Empire (reasonably developed nations in their own right), who would then sell these slaves to westerners. Thanks to slave trade, these nations were able to amass great wealth and power within their regions, until they themselves fell victim to the British and French expansion during the 19th century.
