In the late 1930's, The Bell Aircraft Corporation thought that the answer to protecting America from possible bombing raids was to build a plane with 37mm guns in wing nacelles. The result was too slow, plagued with maintenance issues and rendered obsolete by ever other aircraft in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
