You know, it just occurred to me… why wouldn't a nandroid go with its respective family to a fallout shelter? I can think of at least three reasons why it couldn't hurt: 1) it would not have to compete for the same vital resources as people (e.g., food, water), except for physical space in the shelter, 2) it is inorganic and more likely to survive radiation exposure (to what extent I'm not sure; and if were not to survive, it would better than a human life lost), and 3) it could be shut down indefinitely so as to expend its energy only when the nandroid is needed.
Why must it be placed in an above-ground alcove? Is it somehow a safer place for it than a shelter? Is its rate of power consumption while on battery, or the rate it is able to recharge, great enough that even a few more minutes of mains electricity is precious and worth the risk? Perhaps most importantly, why wouldn't Sterling, in a Cold War era, engineer, prepare, or teach their nandroids how to assist before, during, and after a nuclear attack? Food for thought.
