I mean technically dogs can have chocolate but it's best to treat chocolate like pure alcohol for them.
Eating a bite of chocolate won't kill your dog unless it's a small breed. At best, keep an accurate approximation of the theobromine content in the chocolate.

The bigger weight for the breed, the less dangerous chocolate is (but be careful though). Most safest for any accidental ingestions is milk chocolate. NEVER purposely give chocolate to a pregnant dog though, the theobromine can actually cross the placenta and affect the puppers. Also never purposely give chocolate to young dogs (bigger than puppy but not fully adult).

Also another thing I should mention, Cats are much more sensitive to chocolate/theobromine than dogs are. We don't hear much about "chocolate poisoning" from cats because cats don't randomly eat indiscriminately like dogs do.
