It's not "just waterproof" ok. Gore-tex is the gold standard for not just waterproofing tech but also for wind proofing and breathability. Basically in 1976, Robert Gore stretched a piece of polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE and saw that the structure was micro-porous. That means that it's harder for stuff like water to get in. But stuff like air can get out. So they called this new version EPTFE and started experimenting with garments But that's not even the craziest part. After they filed for the patents, C.R. Bard infringed on the Gore's patent and they went to court. Which the Gore's won, obviously. And now to this day they supply this ePTFE for garments all over the word. From clothing brands like Arcteryx, I just call it Arc by the way, to footwear brands like Salomon. Having a Gore-Tex label on a piece is a sign that it's gotta be the highest quality.
