This word is actually used for a clever trick that allows the game to bypass level name length limitations by squeezing in one extra character. Details in image. The tile map for the text in Super Mario World contains the word "ILLUSIYELLOW" (highlighted in yellow) between the expected graphics of letters in alphabetical order. What first appears like an oversight is actually an inventive trick to bypass one of the game's technical limitations. Most level names fit into that space, however, the Yellow Switch Palace and the numbered Forest of Illusion levels do not. Here is what they would look like if they were spelled out using the regular alphabet tiles in the tileset: YELLOW SWITCH PALAC "Yellow Switch Palace" is too long (20 characters counting the spaces) so it would be cut off at "Yellow Switch Palac". Faced with this problem, the developers had the choice to either rename the levels, try to change the level name length requirements, or use a visual trick to fit the names into the available space. They chose the last option. YELLOW SWITCH PALACE FOREST OF ILLUSION 1 The letters in "ILLUSIYELLOW" actually are misaligned with the 8x8 tile grid, being closer together than usual. This allows the developers to fit "ILLUSI" and "YELLOW", two six-character strings, into 5 characters each, freeing up one extra character at the end to be able to fit the full names. Note how the letters in the "YELLOW" and the "ILLUSI" in these names are closer together (the technical term being "tigher kerning") than in the upper row that uses the regular letters.
