Notes:

EGM's 1994 review of Super Metroid. Note that even back in 1994, the game was well received, with the four reviews each giving it a 9/10 score. Incidentally, the main complaints in two of the reviews seem to be tied to the map, which is retrospectively considered one of the best additions ever to the Metroid series.

Also note that Super Metroid came on a 24 Megabit cartridge. For context, SNES launch games were limited to 4 Megabit cartridges, the largest SNES cartridges at the time were 32 Megabits (Super Street Fighter II), and the largest SNES games ever released were on 48 Megabit cartridges (Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean).
