So I asked him: "Dude, are you okay?" His answer below made me stop feeling sorry for myself whenever I have to work hard. It's like I'm in wrestling season. Do I want to go out? Of course. Do I want to eat pizza? Of course. But I want to win the wrestling tournament more. And I knew that when I committed to a grueling 3 months of weight cutting and competition at the beginning of the season. Every time I have to work a 14 hour day, I see one associate complain and another quit. Instead, I look at it as my opportunity to get ahead. Wrestling season doesn't last forever. This state of work won't last forever. But I'm committed to making partner and that comes first. Am I suggesting you work 100-hour weeks yourself? Absolutely not. This post is for the folks who are CHOOSING to go after something that requires extreme sacrifice that .01% of people achieve: --> Making Partner --> Being the #1 producer at your company --> Taking a startup from zero to IPO If you're trying to do something exceptional, then every second that you spend complaining should be spent reminding yourself that... It's good when it gets hard because that's when other people are dropping out of the race. Otherwise, you should ask yourself. Is the gold medal really worth it? Good morning, it's Monday. Go eat your week alive. Today someone will drop out of your race.

It was a simple comment of "I wish we had feature X". I thought I was being fun. I thought it would get emoji responses and we would move on. The engineers solved it. Do you know how much we pay Software Engineers!? I did not mean for them to work on this thing and solve my issue. But they wanted to make things better, and if the manager points out an issue, they felt like it should be solved. This was not a big deal, and not a ton of time was spent, but it was a good reminder for me that I am not an engineer, I am a manager. And while that title is mostly meaningless to me, it means something to others. What I say magically holds more gravity not because of the merit of the statement, because of the title I hold. If they say nothing, I know they will not enforce even the most fundamental dress code. I cannot work in such chaos. If they tell me to put them back on, I know conformity reigns in this workplace, and my creativity will suffer. I cannot work there. If they tell me to put one sock and shoe on, I know they value balance and compromise. Only then will I work there.
