You couldn't really do the story of Mass Effect correctly in a linear film format because Shepard takes so many detours in saving the galaxy. Like, you're literally going through the personal journeys of so many companions, let alone the personal Shep quests like "I Remember Me", that would be impossible to apply to a film.

It would make WAY more sense as a TV series.
