Project Blue Beam may have been inspired by a plot to remove Fidel Castro reportedly proposed by a World War Two General. The plot involved coercing Cuba's Catholic citizens into believing that Castro was the Antichrist, and then projecting a vision of Jesus asking the masses to reject communism.
February 26th,2 013 Reddit link about the possible origins of the Project Blue Beam conspiracy theory. The post read, "TIL that one proposal to get rid of Castro was to spread rumours that he was the Antichrist, then fake the second coming; a US submarine would project an image of Jesus on some clouds near Havana while firing star-shells. A loudspeaker would be the voice of Jesus, urging them to renounce communism."
